By Kim Parobek: The Young Victoria is a beautifully made love story for the ages.
Rating:
While Queen Victoria is well known for her longevity as a ruler, it's her personal story that is intriguing. The Young Victoria follows the queen from her isolated childhood through the early years of her reign. Most royalty married for political gain but Victoria was the exception, finding true love amidst the scheming and deceit of the royal court. Emily Blunt's portrayal of Victoria is beautifully understated. She captures the fledgling monarch's doubt and indecision as well as her resolve as she navigates through political turmoil. The love story develops naturally, nothing flashy or overly romantic but rather a collection of stolen moments that create a deep connection. Director Jean-Marc Vallee has created a masterpiece that is just as interesting for the politics as well as the love story.
The DVD presentation is excellent. The colors are perfectly balanced with astonishingly natural flesh tones. The details in the opulent settings and the lavish costumers are perfectly crisp and clean. No detail is lost in the transfer. The Dolby Digital 5.1 track is equal to the visuals. The surrounds are active with the score featured prominently but not overpowering the dialogue. There are enough extras to satisfy. They have included several deleted scenes. There are several featurettes, the best giving a glimpse into the real Victoria. The Young Victoria would be an excellent addition to anyone's collection.
